Here's a sketch for what'll be a digital painting for that dang astronaut comic I'm working on. This is mid-WIP.

On that note, there's a great interview with Matsumoto HERE. They've released the completed NO. 5 in English for iPad, which is pretty cool I guess. I've only ever been able to get my hands on Vol. 1, and until this point only the first two volumes were released in English anyway. Also check out Blue Spring and GoGo Monster by Matsumoto- both very good too.

I also started a new comic with an astronaut. I have about a half dozen pages done so far, and hope to keep rolling on it. Here are some initial page sketches:

Shy Town Star Watcher

So, this last weekend I was at The Wizard World Chicago Comicon. It was pretty cool. Selling books and having a table and everything is nice, but the highlights for me were probably the little bits of my own fandom that I was able to slip in. I got some original artwork from Geof Darrow and bothered him a few times over the weekend. He was nice enough to not tell me to "buzz off" as I was drooling over his art. We talked a little bit about Moebius and Totoro too, before I started to feel bad about abandoning my table.

Lee Leslie and I were able to move a good amount of Screamland, and it was nice hearing from people who've been enjoying the work that we've done on it so far. Lee's got a post with pictures and whatnot from the show HERE. Here's a picture he took of me drawing which I yanked:

There was also an Eduardo Risso show at Challengers Comic's art gallery, so we went and checked that out one night. It was amazing. It took all my will power to not blow hundreds of dollars I don't actually have on some original pages that were for sale. Here's my face when I was looking at his black and white pages:

There's also a new Moebius art meme going around the interwebcomputertubes based on his Star Watcher piece. I believe Brandon Graham is responsible for this one, but HERE are a bunch of versions that have been posted on the Quenched Consciousness blog.

I decided to do one in my sketchbook, then decided to color it. It's followed by the black and white version, then the original piece by Moebius:

I was going to post some music I've been listening to lately, but I don't feel like hunting down the links and embedding them and everything else, or whatever, so that's it for now.

Someone suggested that I just make comics in a sketchbook like that. It's an appealing idea. I like working on that scale too. I know that Josh Cotter's Driven By Lemons was done in a moleskin, if I'm not mistaken, and that was a great looking book. That being said, these were originally just thumbnails that got outta hand, so I'm still planning on drawing them full scale. Or whatever.

I always tend to do thumbnails more detailed than probably necessary. I try to justify it by saying it saves me time in the decision-making process once I go full-size. Who knows if that's actually true (NOPE!).

I'm excited to get started on coloring these pages. I've got some ideas on what I'd like to do with the palettes, and some line coloration will really make some of those panels POP, IMO.

That'll have to wait until I get this other deadline off my back and untangled from my back-hair.

Also! I don't know if you're familiar with the Moebius Tumblr Quenched Consciousness, but it's probably the best source for viewing the work of Moebius online- lotta sweet stuff over there. Really, the reason that I bring it up is because this dude recently started one for Katsuhiro Otomo, which is awesome. Check it out HERE. Now to get people to commit to doing blogs in the same vein showcasing Manara, Bilal, Giardino, Mezieres, etc...

The Bakalite

Anyone that knows me fairly well knows that Moebius is a pretty huge artistic influence to me. I was thumbing back through The Airtight Garage and the moderately insignificant character of The Bakalite seemed to stand out, so I decided to give him a draw. People familiar with Mr. Giraud's work know that he is the master of head-wear, and the Bakalite is no exception to this rule.

So I have several semi-neurotic traditions that I must follow with the seasons in order to function properly. One of which is my NEED to read through all of my Essential X-Men collections (those fancy b&w newsprint ones) every Fall-thru-Winter, so I decided that this time, I'd try to do a sketch for at least every other X-Adventure that they go on, drawing the main bad guys and the heroes involved in decimating them. Essentially, th\e Wolverine and Cyclops sketches are warm-ups for this, though their aesthetic is something that isn't a good indicator of what's to come since I'm going to try and use this as a way of testing out different media as well.

Wutta buncha Fauxmos

Hey! Long time! Check out the stuff that we're doing over at The Fauxmosapien Collective.

The idea is that one dude draws a page of a comic, then passes it on for a different dude to draw the next. It's completely improvised and completely fun. The participants are Jon Lane, James Carey, Osciel Ramos, and myself. Osciel still has yet to add a page (alas, he's in TX), but we've been meeting fairly frequently, and I think it could really turn out to be something cool.

So far I, personally, have only drawn 2 pages (which are not yet posted), but here's a piece of concept art that I did for it before we knew exactly what we were doing:

Well, today is the day! Screamland number four is out and with it comes my first ever publication of sequential art. The back-up story is three pages that I illustrated involving both Dracula and Ronald Reagan. Pick it up, already!

An Update

Since it's been quite a while since I've updated (yikes, over a month!), I think that it's fair to say that I should technically have the ability to devote more time to keeping this blog up to date in, at least, the near future; I have more elbow room, in a way, since classes have ended.

There isn't much new completely finished work that I have to show off, however I do have a screen-capture of sorts with a couple of pages from Remembering Garden that are in the process of being colored. All of the pencils and inks are completed on all ten pages. Colors for 5.5 more pages, and then we're home-free with Remembering Garden. I think it's turning out pretty well, plus the experience and growth that I gotten in the time since I've started this project to now has been immense and almost unbelievable. I am content.

Blump 3-d Camera Test

This is a test for my BLUMP animation using Maya. The camera goes faster in this pass than it will in the sequence once the film's actually completed. The little gray block is a place-holder for where a tiny, hand-drawn man will be climbing up the side of the blimp.

The Laughing Man and Hong

These are a couple of "Character in Their Environment" pieces that are due tomorrow.

They are characters that are extremely loosely based off of The Laughing Man and Hong from J.D. Salinger's novella "The Laughing Man." Some serious alterations were made to the Laughing Man character; particularly the face. Hong, on the other hand, is almost completely made up. He is mentioned in one line in the story and is described only as a dumb (non-speaking; the Americans cut out his tongue) Mongolian who is giant in size. I decided that it would be interesting to make him a Mongolian Wrestler simply because they have some of the most interestingly bizarre wrestling outfits.

And that was that.

This is a page from a 10-page short story that I'm working on with Harold Sipe. This is the first page that I consider finished at this point. I still haven't finished all of the pencils and inks 5 of the other pages, but I just couldn't wait to start with the coloring, so I dove in.

Spring Break is Over

As I begin to try to get back into school-mode, I will leave you with two images. The first is a sketch that I did quite a while ago of Hal Wert, a professor here at the Art Institute, as he was discussing the beginning of the new era, relating to Globalization. He believes that the tearing down of the Berlin Wall was the end of "The Old World."

The second image is a little sneak-preview of the inks to a portion of a page in a 10-page short story that I'm illustrating that will hopefully be in the next volume of Image Comics's Popgun anthology book. Harold Sipe is writing it, and the story is about a strange childhood encounter that he had with an unusual, creepy, ghost-like woman on his family's land.

James the Pop and Locker

James is what I consider a local KC celebrity, though most of the folks in this town may just consider him a nuisance. You can generally find him with his GhettoBlasta somewhere on the Plaza whenever the weather is nicer, and generally around town wherever there is a large gathering of people. He is what you'd call a street-performer and he believes that he uses his talent of popping and locking as a positive way to reach people who may not be too familiar with his culture. He quotes KRS-One and Public Enemy as scripture and he is an incredibly genuine guy. This is a sketch that I did of him last year around this time. Enjoy!

Today I received from Harold Sipe a few advance copies of Screamland #1, which coincidentally hits the comic stands tomorrow. Why does this matter to me? Well, besides my extreme fondness for both Harold and Hector, and the fact that I feel pretty invested in this book myself, this is the first time that my actual illustration work will have been published. Now, I've had colors published before (from The Blind Monkey Style segment in POPGUN 1, also from Image Comics), but not until now have my own drawings been printed. And that's exciting for me. Anyway, it's a one-page pin-up at the very end of the comic. Below is the cover for the comic and a small image of the pin-up. Support my friends and buy this book!
